Julia – vermittelt!

JuliaGeschlecht: Hündin, kastriert
Alter:
ca. 6 Jahre
Rasse: Beagle-Mix

Hello Frau Müller-Bernard
We hope all is well with you and all your dogs.
We thought we would drop you a line as we have had Julia for well over a year now and thought it would be a good idea to let you know how she is getting on.

As you know, we moved with Julia from Germany to Portugal in December last year. I know you had some reservations about Julia being in Portugal because of the attitude to animals here but you have no need to worry. We have very animal friendly neighbours and everywhere we go, people stop to pet her. Julia loves the sun – we are in the perfect climate for her. As you can see from the photo, she loves nothing better than just lying in the sun, inside or outside. She is very happy, she has four beds of her own and a sofa to choose from and she loves having freshly cooked chicken or liver as a treat dinner!

One thing we would like to tell you – Julia started to bleed earlier in the year as though she was on heat. We took her to the vet because obviously she was supposed to be sterilised and it turned out she had a huge tumour, 2kgs, on her bladder. It was a type of tumour that was typical with a female dog who has not been castrated. The tumour thankfully turned out to be benign and was successfully removed in emergency surgery and she needed a blood transfusion – it was a huge operation but Julia made a recovery that stunned even the vets. They did find that she had not been properly sterilised and they carried this out as well when they removed the tumour. I would say that whoever was supposed to have castrated Julia, be careful in the future as they did not do a good job. Julia is doing fine now but it could have been so much worse. Since the operation, she is much more agile and can not only go upstairs but also down too!

She drives us nuts but we love her. So far, she has managed to break my nose (I fell because she was right behind me and I didn’t realise) and she put me out of action for six weeks after pulling me into a ditch! But she is a lovely girl and people love her, her temperament means that she will allow anybody to stroke her, even tiny children. I still have an allergy to her, but it is better than it initially was.

One thing I will say – we were told that she would not tolerate another dog with her and we found this to be wrong. I am volunteering at a shelter here in Portugal and we fostered a little boy for three weeks (picture attached) and she was fine with him. We also took in a little girl puppy who was lost and again she was fine. In fact, we are thinking of giving a home to a shelter dog, maybe a little boy, in the future. We think as long as she knows she is the boss, she will be ok, in fact she seems to love company.

Please let Renate in Greece know that Julia is doing really well. She is spoilt beyond belief – we spend more on Julia than we spend on ourselves. She has an injured paw at the moment but it is her own fault for chasing our neighbours’ lovely cat! Thankfully their cats are much smarter and faster than Julia!!!
Feel free to post the pictures on your website as a success story.

Wishing you all the best and a good first advent!
Liebe Grüße aus Portugal
